Karakteristik Termoplastik Elastomer dari Polystyrena dan Lateks Pekat Karet Alam yang dibuat secara Emulsi
The thermoplastic elastomer was mixture of several polymer compound which have thermoplastic properties by conventional elastomer function. The melting process of the TPE cause degradation of the natural rubber because the natural rubber was very sensitive on thermal and oxidation, but the emulsion method can avoid degradation during the preparing process, the elasticity of the natural rubber and the tensile strength of the PS were awakened. So the TPE result have the excellent mechanical properties.
The grafting process of polystyrene with maleic anhydride was carried out in the internal mixer at temperature 2400C using benzoil peroxide as initiator then characterized using the spectrophotometer (FT.IR). The PS-g-MA was dissolved in the toluene and made the emulsion using ammonium lauryl sulfate as emulsifier. The PS-g-MA emulsion mixed with NR Latex at the several ratio using ammonium lauryl sulphate (ALS) as emulsifier and characterized by photo digital 400 x . The mixture was poured into a mould and left in blower oven at 250C for 8 - 12 hours to remove the bubble and cured at 35 – 500C. The cured specimen was allowed to cool slowly at room temperature in the mould. The morphology of specimen was characterized by photo SEM and the tensile strength test were performed according to ASTM D-638.
The results show that the grafting process of PS with MA was success. The particles size of the PS-g-MA/NRL emulsion was revealed by photomicroscope analysis. According to the result, the PS-g-MA/NRL emulsion could be described as partially miscible blend and stable at ratio of PS-g-MA/NRL : 90/10, the particles size of the emulsion at about 1 – 10 mm. The tensile strength of film PS-g-MA/NRL increased as increasing of the curing time but the elongation at break was decreased.
